The Pool Party Betrayal

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her stupid oversized sun hat like it was a shield. Which, honestly, it kinda was — a shield against Jordan's existence.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, splashing enough to soak her denim shorts. His baseball cap was backwards (of course it was) and droplets clung to his eyelashes like he was in some low-budget rom-com.

"I'm good," Maya lied, adjusting her hat for the fiftieth time. Her curls were already rebelling against the humidity. The last thing she needed was Jordan — who she'd been crushing on since seventh grade — seeing her with wet hair like a drowned poodle.

Meanwhile, inside the house, her dad was apparently having a midlife crisis over the cable TV. Every few minutes, frustrated shouting drifted through the open patio door: "WHY ISN'T IT WORKING I JUST WANT TO WATCH THE GAME"

Her phone buzzed. Kai: *dude your brother just posted the most embarrassing thirst trap of u at this exact party*

Maya's stomach dropped. She scrambled to unlock her phone, and there it was — a candid from Jordan's Instagram story. Her. Standing awkwardly by the pool. Hat. Clutching. Looking like she'd rather be anywhere else. Caption: *pool party vibes ☀️*

"You saw it," Jordan said, suddenly beside her. He'd climbed out of the water without her noticing.

"Saw what?" she squeaked.

"The story." He smirked. "I mean, you're literally wearing that hat like it's your only personality trait."

"It's NOT my only personality trait!"

"Prove it." He grabbed her wrist. "Get in the pool. Lose the hat. Be a person for once."

"I — wait —"

But he was already pulling her toward the water. His hand was warm. His grip was gentle. And then she was falling, plunging into the cool blue chaos, surfacing sputting while Jordan laughed like he'd just won the lottery.

Her hat floated away like a abandoned ship.

"You're the worst," she said, pushing wet hair out of her face.

"You're alive," he countered, grinning. "Also, your dad fixed the cable. The game's on inside if you want to watch."

Maya looked at her discarded hat, then at Jordan's stupid perfect smile, then at the water rippling around them.

"Actually," she said, splashing him right in the face, "I think I'll stay right here."
