The Pool Party Apocalypse
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her orange soda like it was a lifeline. The infamous sophomore pool party. Everyone who was anyone was here, and Maya felt conspicuously... not.
"You okay?" Her best friend Chloe appeared beside her, looking like a zombie after pulling three all-nighters in a row. Dark circles, messy bun, the works.
"Just thinking about how I can't bear to get in there," Maya admitted, gesturing at the crystal blue water where popular kids were doing cannonballs and flirting shamelessly.
"Dude, you've been obsessing over this all week." Chloe took a swig of Maya's soda. "Just jump. Literally. The water's fine, the people are whatever, and I heard Jake's going to be shirtless."
Maya rolled her eyes but felt the tension in her chest loosen. Chloe had that effect—like human Xanax but with more sarcasm.
Across the pool, a giant inflatable bear drifted aimlessly. Someone had brought it as a joke, but now it sat alone, looking weirdly dignified among the chaos.
"You know what?" Maya said, setting down her drink. "I'm gonna do it."
"Finally!" Chloe cheered, way too loud.
But instead of heading toward the crowded shallow end, Maya marched straight to the deep end and launched herself into a cannonball. The water swallowed her, cool and perfect, and for a second everything else disappeared.
When she surfaced, spluttering and grinning, she caught Jake watching her from across the pool. He actually smiled.
Chloe gave her a thumbs up. "See? Was that so hard?"
Maya treaded water, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. Sometimes you just had to jump in, zombie friend by your side, giant inflatable bear watching judgmentally from afar, and see what happened.
