The Pool Party Apocalypse
Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his towel like a lifeline. The annual end-of-summer blowout at Jessica's house was legendary, and he'd finally been invited. But that didn't stop his brain from serving up worst-case scenarios like a malfunctioning jukebox.
"Yo, Marcus! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Tyler called from the diving board, surrounded by the cool crowd that had ruled eighth grade since forever.
Marcus forced a laugh. "Just warming up, bro."
Inside the house, Jessica's little brother was binge-watching zombie shows on cable, the volume cranked so loud that occasional groans and screams drifted across the backyard. Maybe that was fitting—Marcus felt like he'd been zombie-walking through social situations since middle school began.
He'd barely survived the lunchroom hierarchy, and now he had to navigate pool politics? The deep end was basically eighth grade society in miniature: popular kids at the diving board, athletes doing laps, and everyone else awkwardly treading water in the middle.
"Marcus!" Jessica waved from the shallow end, her friends giggling. "We're doing chicken fights! You can be on Tyler's team!"
His stomach did something weird. This was it—his chance to level up his social standing or face-plant spectacularly. He dropped his towel and slid into the pool, the cool water shocking away some of his anxiety.
Tyler positioned himself on Marcus's shoulders, and suddenly they were facing off against Jessica and her best friend. The pool erupted in chaos, splashing and laughter everywhere. Marcus's legs strained, but for the first time all summer, he wasn't overthinking every move.
"Bro, you're actually crushing this!" Tyler said as they somehow won the match.
Later, wrapped in his towel watching the sunset over the pool, Marcus caught Tyler's eye and got a nod of respect. The zombie apocalypse was still blaring from inside, but the real social minefield? He'd survived it. And maybe next time, he'd even enjoy swimming in the deep end.
