The Pool Party Apocalypse

Maya stood at the edge of the crystal blue water, feeling like a total zombie after finals week. Three hours of sleep per night for five days would do that to you. But Jenna's pool party was THE social event of the summer, and missing it wasn't an option.

The popular kids lounged on inflatable flamingos arranged in a perfect social pyramid at the deep end. Jenna and her squad at the top, the wannabes in the middle, and everyone else awkwardly treading water below. Maya had played this game since middle school—know exactly where you belong, don't make waves, literally or figuratively.

"Hey, you coming in?"

She jumped. Liam, the soccer captain, stood behind her dripping wet. CHILL, Maya told herself. He's just being polite.

"Yeah, just... warming up," she lied, smooth as sandpaper.

"Here." His cousin tossed her a paper plate. "Try the spinach dip. My mom made it."

Spinach. At a pool party. Bold choice.

Maya took a polite bite, but something felt wrong. Really wrong. She caught her reflection in the sliding glass door—two massive green specks stuck between her front teeth. INSTANT social suicide. Her face burned hotter than a fever dream.

Without thinking, she bolted toward the bathroom, but her flip-flop caught on the diving board edge. Time slowed as she pinwheeled forward, knocking over THREE flamingos and sending the popular pyramid crashing into the water in a chaotic splash explosion.

Complete. Silence.

But then someone laughed. Not mean laughing—REAL laughing. Liam was doubled over. "That was EPIC."

Maya stood there, spinach teeth and all, and started cracking up too. Something about how ridiculously dramatic it all was—this whole performance we do for each other—just hit different.

"You good?" Jenna actually sounded concerned, climbing off her deflated flamingo.

"Yeah," Maya said, finally spitting out the spinach. "Actually? I'm great."

Sometimes destroying the social pyramid is exactly what you need. Who knew being a total disaster could feel so alive?
