The Pool Party Algorithm

Standing at the edge of Jessica's pool, clutching my phone like it might actually save me from social death, I watched the popular kids float on neon inflatables like they owned the water. Meanwhile, I was calculating the optimal angle to jump in without looking like a total dork.

Then I saw him — Mr. Henderson's golden retriever, Buster, staring at me through the fence. The weird thing? Buster never barked. He just watched, like he was cataloging my every move for later review.

"Hey Marcus!" called Tyler, sliding off a flamingo raft. "We're doing vitamin shots before the cannonball contest. You in?"

I froze. Vitamin shots? Since when did pool parties require supplements? But I nodded, because refusing would've been worse than whatever mysterious powder Tyler was mixing.

Buster's eyes followed me as I approached the outdoor kitchen. That's when I noticed it — a tiny silver gadget clipped to his collar, catching sunlight. A camera. The dog was wearing a spy cam.

"Your grandpa's tech company testing pet surveillance again?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

Tyler laughed, dumping something into orange juice. "Bro, it's for his TikTok. Buster's got like 50K followers. 'POV: Pool Party Crash' gets mad views."

Everything clicked. Buster wasn't spying on me — he was content. Mr. Henderson wasn't some creep monitoring the neighborhood. The awkward stares? Just a golden retriever being surprisingly photogenic.

I took my shot glass of what turned out to be emergen-C. "Cool," I said, finally exhaling. "Can he get my good side?"

"Bro," Tyler said, "you're overthinking it. Just jump in already."

So I did. Cannonball style, awkward as hell, but with Buster recording every splash for his adoring fans. Sometimes the spy cam isn't watching you — it's just capturing your moment to become part of something bigger than yourself. And honestly? That was fine by me.
