The Pool of Wonders
Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she'd splash in her backyard pool until her toes wrinkled like prunes. But today was different.
As Lily dove into the cool blue water, something magical happened. The pool began to glow golden, and the water sparkled like tiny stars. When she surfaced, a magnificent creature sat on the pool's edge — a sphinx with emerald eyes and golden fur shimmering in the sunlight.
"Young swimmer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind through desert dunes, "I am the Guardian of Pools. I have watched you splash and play with joy. Now, will you answer my riddle?"
Lily nodded, her heart pounding with excitement.
"What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" the sphinx asked.
Lily thought hard. She remembered this from school! "A human!" she cried. "Babies crawl, grown-ups walk on two legs, and old people use canes!"
The sphinx purred with approval. "Correct! But there is more to this magic. Behind the garden shed lives my friend — a bull named Barnaby who thinks he's too clumsy to swim. He believes his heavy hooves will sink like stones."
Suddenly, a large brown nose peeked around the corner. Barnaby the bull looked nervous, his big brown eyes worried.
"May I help?" Lily asked. "Swimming isn't about being light or graceful. It's about trusting the water to hold you."
Lily showed Barnaby how to float. "The water wants to support you," she said gently. "Just relax and let it."
The bull took a deep breath and stepped into the shallow end. At first, he sank a little, but soon he was floating! His massive body bobbed like a happy cork. Barnaby splashed with joy, creating waves that made the sphinx laugh.
"Thank you, Lily," the sphinx said. "You taught us that courage means trying things that scare us, and friendship means helping others believe in themselves."
From that day on, every time Lily went swimming, she had two special friends — a wise sphinx who loved riddles, and a bull who wasn't afraid to make the biggest splashes of all.
