The Pool of Wonders
Benny loved summer days more than anything. Every morning, he would grab his favorite baseball— the one with the blue stripe he'd painted himself— and practice pitching in the backyard. But today was different. As Benny wound up for his best throw, the ball slipped from his fingers and sailed straight toward the mysterious pool behind the old oak tree. Everyone said the pool was magical. No one had ever seen the bottom, and some days, it sparkled with colors that weren't in the rainbow. Splash! The baseball disappeared beneath the shimmering surface. Benny rushed to the edge, expecting to see it sink to the bottom. Instead, the water began to glow with a soft golden light. The pool started bubbling, and up rose a great, shaggy brown bear. But this wasn't just any bear. This bear wore a tiny baseball cap and held Benny's baseball gently in one massive paw. 'Is this yours?' the bear rumbled in a voice like distant thunder. Benny was too amazed to be scared. 'Yes! How did you—' 'I live below the pool,' the bear explained with a gentle smile. 'In my world, we love baseball too. I heard you practicing every morning, and I wanted to meet my friend.' The bear extended a paw as big as a dinner plate. 'I'm Bruno. Would you like to play?' Benny's eyes widened. 'Really? But I don't have my ball—' Bruno tossed it back with perfect aim. 'Now you do.' For hours, they played catch. Bruno was surprisingly gentle for such a huge bear. He taught Benny how to throw a curveball, and Benny taught Bruno how to slide into home plate. They laughed until their sides hurt. As the sun began to set, Bruno stood up. 'I have to go back now, but I'll be watching from the pool.' He splashed back into the water, sending up sparkles of rainbow light. From that day on, Benny never felt alone playing baseball. Sometimes, when he hit a particularly good shot, he'd see the pool shimmer with what looked like a bear-sized smile. He'd learned that the best friends can be found in the most unexpected places, and that magic is real if you're brave enough to believe.
