The Pool of Wonder
Max tossed his baseball up and down, practicing in the backyard. His orange cat, Whiskers, watched from the porch, tail twitching with curiosity.
"Hey Max," Whiskers meowed suddenly. "Throw that ball into the old pool!"
Max stared at his cat. "Since when can you talk?!"
"Since you discovered magic!" Whiskers purred. "Just throw it!"
Shrugging, Max hurled the baseball toward the dried-up pool. But instead of landing with a thud, the ball bounced off a invisible surface and shimmered with rainbow colors.
Suddenly, the empty pool filled with sparkling water. A giant figure rose from the depths – a zombie bear! But this wasn't scary. The bear's fur was patchy and mossy, one eye dangled loosely, and his grin was full of missing teeth.
"ROAR!" the zombie bear cheered, waving a baseball mitt. "Want to play?"
Max's fear melted away. "You're a zombie... but you're friendly!"
"Appearances can be deceiving," the bear rumbled gently. "I'm Benny, and I've been waiting in this magical pool for someone brave enough to play catch."
Whiskers pranced over. "I told you! Magic exists for those who believe!"
All afternoon, Max, Whiskers, and Benny played baseball. Benny's loose eye swung when he laughed, and his zombie shuffle became a happy dance whenever Max made a good throw.
"You're not scary at all," Max said.
Benny smiled warmly. "Being different doesn't mean being bad. Sometimes the most unusual friends are the best ones."
As sunset painted the sky orange, Benny sank back into his magical pool. "Visit anytime, Max. Remember: true friendship sees beyond appearances."
That night, Max drifted to sleep with Whiskers curled beside him, both dreaming of their zombie bear friend and the magical pool where the most wonderful adventures began with just one baseball toss.
