The Pool of Wishing Stars
Lily stared at the shimmering water in her backyard pool. It was the last day of summer, and she hadn't made a single friend since moving to the new neighborhood. Her grandmother had given her an old iPhone before she passed away, telling Lily it was special. Lily had kept it in her pocket ever since, like a lucky charm.
As she sat by the pool's edge, something extraordinary happened. The water began to glow with tiny lights, like captured stars swimming beneath the surface. Lily leaned closer, and her phone slipped from her pocket—splash! Right into the magical water.
But instead of sinking, the phone floated. And then it began to ring with a melody like wind chimes and laughter.
"Hello?" Lily whispered, answering the call.
"You've found the Pool of Wishing Stars!" a bubbly voice chirped. A girl with hair the color of kelp and eyes like pearls popped up from the water. "I'm Coral, and I live below! This pool is connected to the Ocean Kingdom through magic tunnels."
Coral explained that she was a pool mermaid who guarded special treasures. From her shimmering purse, she pulled something that looked like a tiny, glowing capsule.
"This is a friendship vitamin," Coral said mysteriously. "One sprinkle, and whoever you meet will see the real, wonderful you."
Lily sprinkled the sparkling dust over herself just as her neighbor Mateo walked by the fence.
"Hi!" Mateo called out, grinning. "I've been wanting to meet you. I saw you reading fairy tales on your porch. Do you like adventure stories?"
Lily's heart soared. The friendship vitamin had worked! Or maybe it had been inside her all along, waiting for the right moment.
"I LOVE adventures," Lily said.
Coral waved goodbye and slipped beneath the water with a splash. "Visit whenever you need magic!" she called.
That afternoon, Lily and Mateo sat by the pool reading stories together. Lily realized that sometimes the best magic isn't in phones or potions—it's in being brave enough to say hello to a potential new friend. And that was the greatest adventure of all.
