The Pool of Wishing Stars
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house in the country. Behind the old farmhouse stood a cluster of swaying palm trees, their leaves dancing in the warm breeze like green fingers waving hello.
One hot afternoon, Lily followed a sparkling path behind the palms and discovered something she had never seen before—a crystal pool nestled in a secret garden. The water shimmered with colors she couldn't name, and tiny stars seemed to swim beneath its surface.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" a deep voice rumbled.
Lily jumped! Standing beside her was the most enormous bull she had ever seen, with golden fur that glowed in the sunlight and kind eyes like warm honey. Most children would have run away, but Lily sensed something gentle about him.
"I'm Barnaby," the bull said softly. "I've guarded this magical pool for three hundred years."
"Magic?" Lily whispered.
Barnaby nodded. "The water grants one wish to those with pure hearts. But you must use it wisely."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for endless candy, or a puppy, or to fly like a bird. But then she remembered her grandmother, who missed her grandfather so much since he passed away. Grandma's smiles didn't reach her eyes anymore.
"I wish for my grandmother to be happy again," Lily said, looking into the glowing water.
The pool bubbled and sparkled. A warm breeze swept through the palm trees, carrying what looked like golden butterflies dancing toward the farmhouse.
Barnaby smiled. "That was the most beautiful wish anyone has ever made, Lily."
That evening, Lily's grandmother laughed for the first time in months as she told stories about Grandpa. Her smile finally reached her eyes again.
Lily visited Barnaby and the magical pool many times after that, but she never made another wish. She had learned something wonderful: the best magic isn't about getting what you want—it's about giving happiness to others.
And sometimes, the greatest adventure is simply being kind.
