The Pool of Wishing Stars
Lily loved her backyard more than anything in the world. In the center sparkled her swimming pool, and beside it stood a tall palm tree that seemed to touch the clouds. But the best part of her backyard was Max, her golden dog, and Whiskers, her orange cat, who were best friends even though everyone said dogs and cats couldn't get along.
One hot summer afternoon, Lily was playing catch with her dad. Her baseball sailed high into the air—too high! It landed right in the center of the pool with a splash. Lily rushed to the edge, but instead of sinking, the baseball began to glow.
"What's happening?" she whispered.
Max barked happily and Whiskers meowed, both tails twitching with excitement. The baseball started floating, spinning like magic. Ripples of light spread across the pool, transforming the water into sparkling stars.
The palm tree's leaves shimmered, and a gentle voice spoke, "You have found the Pool of Wishing Stars. Make one wish, child."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for endless ice cream, or a castle, or to fly. But she looked at Max chasing his tail and Whiskers batting at a floating leaf, and she knew.
"I wish that everyone could have a friend like Max and Whiskers—someone different from them who makes them happy anyway."
The stars in the pool swirled upward, forming a beautiful rainbow that arched across the sky. Then the baseball floated back to Lily's hand, now warm and glowing softly.
That night, as Lily fell asleep with Max curled up at her feet and Whiskers purring by her pillow, she understood the best magic wasn't in wishes. It was in loving someone who was different from you, just like her dog and cat who taught everyone that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes.
And sometimes, she realized, the most magical things are the ones you already have.
