The Pool of Wishing Stars
Lily loved exploring the forest behind her grandmother's house. Every Saturday, she would pack her adventure bag with a juice box, crackers, and her favorite stuffed bunny. But one Saturday, she wandered farther than ever before, past the babbling brook and the ancient oak tree with the twisted trunk.
That's when she found it—a pool so still it looked like a mirror made of liquid silver. The water shimmered with tiny lights, as if someone had sprinkled diamond dust across the surface. Lily had never seen anything so magical.
"Hello?" she called softly. "Is anyone here?"
To her surprise, the water rippled without any wind. Then, slowly rising from the pool, appeared the friendliest bear she had ever seen. His fur was the color of autumn leaves, and his eyes twinkled like the stars embedded in the pool itself.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear rumbled gently. "I've been waiting for someone with a pure heart to visit my pool."
Lily wasn't scared. Something about Barnaby felt warm and safe, like a hug from her grandmother. "I'm Lily. What kind of pool is this?"
"The Pool of Wishing Stars," Barnaby explained. "Long ago, stars fell from the sky and landed here. They grant one special wish to anyone brave enough to visit, and kind enough to use it wisely."
Lily's eyes widened. She could wish for anything! A million dollars, a castle, a trip to the moon. But then she thought about her lonely grandfather, who had lost his wife last year and spent most days sitting alone in his garden.
"I wish," Lily said carefully, "for my grandfather to find happiness again."
The pool erupted in swirls of golden light. Stars danced around Lily and Barnaby, filling the air with sparkles. When the magic settled, Barnaby smiled.
"Your wish has been granted," he said. "And because you wished for someone else's happiness, you've gained something too—me as a friend forever."
Lily hugged Barnaby's soft fur, knowing she had discovered something more precious than any wish. The real magic wasn't in the pool at all. It was in choosing kindness.
Every Saturday after that, Lily visited Barnaby at the Pool of Wishing Stars. And her grandfather? He started teaching neighborhood children how to grow flowers, finding joy again through sharing his love of gardening with new friends.
