The Pool of Wishing Goldfish
Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she would beg her mother to take her to the community pool, where she would glide through the cool blue water like a mermaid. But this year was different. Her family had moved to an old house with something mysterious in the backyard.
Behind a tangled vine fence, Lily discovered an abandoned swimming pool. It wasn't empty like she expected — rain had filled it with crystal-clear water, and something magical shimmered beneath the surface. As she leaned closer, she saw them: dozens of golden fish, their scales glowing like tiny stars.
One goldfish, larger than the rest, swam right up to Lily. Its eyes sparkled with ancient wisdom.
"We've been waiting for you," the goldfish said. "I'm Finn, and these are my friends. We're not ordinary fish — we're Wishing Goldfish."
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Only to those with kind hearts," Finn bubbled. "Jump in and swim with us. We have something wonderful to share."
Without hesitation, Lily slipped into the pool. The water felt warm and welcoming, like a hug. As she began swimming, something incredible happened — she could breathe underwater! Finn led her deeper, and the pool bottom transformed into a golden kingdom of coral castles and pearl palaces.
"Make a wish," Finn said. "Any wish your heart desires."
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for treasure, or to fly, or for endless summer. But then she remembered the lonely kids she'd seen at her new school, sitting alone at recess.
"I wish for friends," Lily said softly. "Real friends who like swimming and adventures and believing in magic."
Finn smiled, blowing a stream of silver bubbles. "That's the best wish of all."
The next day, Lily met Maya at the pool, then Sam, then tiny Ruby. Soon they were all swimming together, and only Lily could hear Finn's secret message: True magic isn't in wishes — it's in sharing adventures with friends.
Every summer after, the children returned to their secret pool, swimming and laughing and making wishes together. And somewhere in the golden depths, Finn and his goldfish friends shimmered with joy, knowing they had found something more precious than magic — friendship.
