The Pool of Wishing Dreams
Lily loved summer mornings, especially when the sun painted the sky in shades of pink and gold. But her favorite place was the old swimming pool behind her grandfather's house. It wasn't just any pool — Grandpa said it was magic.
"One wish," he'd whisper, his eyes twinkling like stars. "Throw something special in, and the pool grants one wish."
Lily wanted to believe, but she was eight now, too old for silly stories. Until the day she found the papaya.
It sat on the kitchen counter, bright orange and impossibly perfect, like a tiny sun. Grandpa had brought it from his garden. "This one's special," he said. "Grew right by the pool."
That afternoon, Lily's friends came over for a baseball game. They played until sunset, laughing and running. But when Lily went to catch the final ball, she tripped. The baseball rolled straight toward the pool.
"No!" she cried, but it was too late. Splash!
Her best friend Marco gasped. The water began to glow. Deep below, something swirled — gold light, like stars dancing. And floating there beside the baseball was the papaya, somehow fallen in too.
"Throw something else in!" Marco shouted. "The pool needs to balance!"
Lily remembered the bottle on Grandpa's table. VITAMIN C, it read. The special one he made from fruit. She grabbed it and sprinkled three drops into the glowing water.
The light exploded upward, forming a magnificent rainbow bridge. At its top sat a tiny creature — a water sprite with skin like moonlight and eyes full of ancient wisdom.
"You brought gifts," the sprite said. "A papaya of sunshine, a baseball of friendship, and a vitamin of health. What do you wish?"
Lily looked at Marco, at the pool, at the magical creature. "I wish everyone could feel this happy. Every day."
The sprite smiled. "Granted."
The next morning, Lily woke to find small papayas growing by the pool. Baseballs appeared in yards everywhere. And everyone who swam in the pool felt energized, like they'd taken the best vitamin ever.
The magic wasn't grand or showy. It was simple — joy in small things, laughter with friends, and the wonder of believing that sometimes, just sometimes, wishes really do come true.
