The Pool of Wishes
Barnaby was a small bear with a very big heart. He lived in a cozy cave at the edge of the Whispering Woods, where the trees hummed lullabies at night. Every evening, Barnaby's best friend Fennec the fox would visit, her copper fur glowing like embers in the sunset light.
One day, Fennec came bouncing through the ferns with exciting news. "Barnaby! I found something magical! Follow me!"
Curious, Barnaby lumbered after her through dappled forests and over bubbling brooks until they reached a place he had never seen before. There, sparkling in a clearing of mossy stones, was the most beautiful pool Barnaby had ever seen. The water shimmered with rainbow colors, and tiny silver fish darted like living stars.
But the most surprising thing was an old steel cable stretched across the pool, as if someone long ago had tried to build something wonderful here and never finished it.
"What is this place?" Barnaby whispered.
Just then, the air grew warm and golden. From behind a weeping willow emerged a magnificent sphinx with wings like sunset clouds. Her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
"Welcome, little friends," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle bells. "This is the Pool of Wishes. The cable was left by those who forgot that magic cannot be built—it must be believed."
Fennec's tail twitched with excitement. "Can we make wishes?"
"You may," the sphinx smiled, "but the pool grants only one kind of wish: wishes for others."
Barnaby thought hard. Then he knew exactly what to wish for. "I wish for Fennec to find her lost brother." Fennec's eyes filled with happy tears. She had been searching for months.
The pool sparkled brighter than ever. The old cable suddenly hummed with light, and the ripples formed a picture in the water—Fennec's brother, safe and happy in a valley just beyond the hills.
"Thank you, Barnaby!" Fennec hugged her friend tight.
The sphinx nodded approvingly. "You have learned the greatest magic, little bear. The strongest cable that connects us is kindness."
That night, as Fennec raced off to find her brother, Barnaby curled up in his cave, knowing that the best wishes are the ones we give away.
