The Pool of Secrets

Elena adjusted the brim of her hat, pulling it lower over her eyes. The Panama had cost more than her first car, but in this city, appearance was everything. She sat on the wrought-iron chair at the rooftop pool, iPhone resting on her thigh like a sleeping weapon.

This was supposed to be simple: follow the target, document the meeting, collect the fee. Three years of corporate espionage had taught her that nothing was ever simple.

The man emerged from the changing room. Marcus Hart, CEO of the pharmaceutical company her client wanted to acquire. He was sixty, fit in that way that came from personal trainers and precision nutrition, and he began swimming laps with mechanical efficiency.

Elena's phone buzzed. Her husband.

'Coming home for dinner?'

She typed 'Yes' and watched Marcus swim. The way he cut through water—smooth, relentless, almost predatory. She remembered swimming with her father before the divorce, before she learned that people always left eventually.

A woman approached the pool. Young, beautiful, wearing a red swimsuit that seemed to deliberately catch the light. She lowered herself into the water beside Marcus's lane, waiting.

Elena raised her iPhone, camera ready. This was it—the evidence her client needed. The supposed affair that would crater Hart's stock price.

Marcus stopped swimming. He treaded water near the woman. They spoke, Elena too far to hear. The woman passed him something small—USB drive? Envelope? Marcus took it, kissed her cheek, and climbed out.

Elena's thumb hovered over the record button. But something stopped her. Maybe it was the woman's expression—relief, not passion. Maybe it was Marcus's face as he looked back at the pool—sadness, not satisfaction.

Her phone buzzed again. Her husband.

'I know about the jobs. The lies. We need to talk.'

Elena looked at the iPhone, then at Marcus gathering his things, then at her own reflection in the darkened screen. A spy who couldn't see what was happening in her own house.

She deleted both messages. Lowered her hat. And began walking toward the exit, past the swimming pool that held everyone's secrets but her own.
