The Pool of Orange Starlight

Lily loved summer evenings best of all. That's when she'd sneak through the tall grass behind her house to find the magic pool.

The pool wasn't like any other. It glowed with soft orange light, as if someone had captured a piece of sunset and poured it into the water. Lily had discovered it by accident one night, chasing fireflies.

But tonight something was wrong. The pool's light was flickering, dimming like a dying flashlight.

"Oh no," Lily whispered. She knelt beside the water, her reflection wavering on the surface. "What's happening to you?"

From the shadows emerged the old bull who lived in the meadow. Lily had seen him many times, usually sleeping under the oak tree or slowly munching clover. The farmers called him Ferdinand, and everyone said he was the gentlest bull in the valley.

Ferdinand lumbered to the pool's edge and lowered his massive head. His brown eyes were sad.

"The pool needs magic," a voice seemed to whisper in Lily's mind. She wasn't scared—she knew this was part of the wonder.

Lily thought hard. What made magic? Happiness? Laughter? Kindness?

Then she remembered—the orange! She'd picked the perfect orange from the grove that morning, saving it for something special. It sat in her pocket, still warm from the sun.

She pulled it out and held it to the bull's nose. Ferdinand sniffed, then carefully took it from her hand with his rubbery lips. But instead of eating it, he dropped the orange into the pool.

Splash!

Ripples of orange light spread across the water. The pool began to glow brighter and brighter, filling the meadow with golden warmth. Fireflies danced above it like tiny floating stars.

Ferdinand nudged Lily's hand with his wet nose, and she understood. The magic hadn't been just the orange—it had been sharing, friendship, and kindness. The bull had known all along.

From that night on, Lily always visited the pool with Ferdinand. And every time she brought something to share—a flower, a story, even just her company—the pool glowed orange and bright, reminding her that the real magic wasn't in the water at all.

It was in friendship.
