The Pool of Ancient Dreams

Lily and Marco loved summer days at the community pool. They practiced their swimming, racing from one end to the other until their fingers wrinkled like prunes.

One particularly hot afternoon, as Marco dove underwater, something magical happened. The blue water shimmered and turned to gold. When he surfaced, gasping for breath, he wasn't in the pool anymore.

"Lily!" he called. "You have to see this!"

Lily dove in too, and together they found themselves floating in a magnificent pyramid filled with glowing hieroglyphs. The walls sparkled like stars, and the air smelled of cinnamon and sunshine.

"Welcome, young swimmers," purred a voice from the shadows.

A beautiful sphinx stepped forward, her lion body powerful and graceful, her human face kind and wise. "I've been waiting for brave friends like you."

"Why us?" asked Lily, trembling slightly.

"Because only those who truly love swimming can enter the Pyramid of Dreams," the sphinx explained. "But I need your help. My friend Ferdinand has been trapped in the Hall of Riddles for three thousand years."

"Who's Ferdinand?" Marco asked.

"The sweetest bull you'll ever meet," said the sphinx. "He's not scary at all. He just loves to play and make new friends. But he can't leave until someone solves three riddles."

The children nodded bravely. Together, they swam through chambers filled with ancient treasures—golden necklaces, sparkling jewels, and statues of pharaohs who looked like they were sleeping.

Finally, they reached Ferdinand. The massive bull had the gentlest brown eyes and the softest golden fur.

"Riddle one," Ferdinand said softly. "What has hands but cannot clap?"

"A clock!" Lily shouted.

"Riddle two. What gets wetter the more it dries?"

"A towel!" Marco cried.

"Final riddle. What can you catch but not throw?"

"A cold!" they said together.

Ferdinand leaped with joy, the whole pyramid shaking. "You did it! Now we can all be friends!"

The sphinx smiled. "You showed courage and kindness. That's the greatest treasure of all."

When Lily and Marco surfaced back in their pool, their hair was dry, but their hearts were full of magic.

"Did that really happen?" Lily whispered.

Marco held up a small golden scarab beetle in his palm. "I think so. And I think we'll visit again tomorrow."

That summer, they learned that the best adventures are the ones you share with friends, and that courage comes in all sizes—even when you're just two kids who love swimming in a pool on a hot day.
