The Pool in the Palm

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's enchanted garden. Every afternoon, she'd wander among the flowers that hummed soft lullabies and the bushes that grew berries which tasted like sunshine.

One particularly hot day, Lily discovered something she'd never noticed before. Behind a curtain of ivy, an enormous palm tree stood tall, its leaves like green umbrellas reaching for the sky. But what made Lily gasp was what she saw in the center of the palm tree's oldest, largest leaf.

There, cradled in the curved leaf like a precious treasure, was a tiny pool of water—no bigger than a soup bowl—yet it shimmered with colors that changed every time she blinked: gold, then silver, then soft pink.

"Hello there," whispered a voice like wind chimes.

Lily jumped. Peeking over the edge of the palm leaf was a tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, with wings like a dragonfly and skin that sparkled like dewdrops.

"I'm Opal," the fairy said. "And this is the Moon Pool. It's where we come to swim when the real world is too loud."

"You go swimming in there?" Lily asked. "But it's so small!"

Opal giggled. "The Moon Pool is bigger on the inside than the outside. Would you like to see?"

Before Lily could answer, Opal sprinkled something that looked like stardust into the pool. The water began to swirl, forming a tiny whirlpool. Then, to Lily's amazement, Opal dove right in!

"Come on!" Opal called, her voice echoing as if from far away. "The water's wonderful!"

Lily hesitated, then leaned closer. The pool suddenly looked enormous—deep and blue and inviting. She dipped her finger in, and in a blink, she found herself floating in water as warm as a bath, in a grotto filled with glowing crystals and friendly fish that looked like they were made of rainbows.

"Swimming with friends is the best kind of swimming," Opal said, paddling beside her. "Some things are too wonderful to do alone."

They splashed and played until the sun began to set. As Opal helped Lily climb back out, the tiny fairy pressed something into her hand—a perfect shell, pearl-white and smooth.

"So you'll remember," Opal said with a wink. "And whenever you feel lonely, just come back. The Moon Pool is always here for friends."

Lily ran home clutching her shell, her heart full of magic. She had discovered that sometimes the most wonderful adventures come in the smallest packages—and that the best discoveries are the ones we share with friends.
