The Pool in the Palm

Barnaby was a small golden **dog** with floppy ears and a very big problem. He had never learned to **swim**, and summer had arrived with all its hot, sticky sunshine.

Every day, Barnaby watched the children splashing in the blue **pool** behind their house. They laughed and bobbed like happy apples in water, but Barnaby's paws stayed safely on dry grass.

"You'll never know what you're missing," whispered the old coconut **palm** tree that stood beside the pool. Her fronds swished in the warm breeze like green skirts dancing.

Barnaby looked up. "I'm afraid. The water looks so big and deep."

The palm tree chuckled, a sound like rustling paper. "Little one, I've seen many seasons come and go. My roots drink water deep underground. Fear is just a question you haven't answered yet."

That afternoon, something magical happened. Barnaby's favorite ball — the bright red one he loved more than bones — bounced. It bounced once, twice, and *splash*! Right into the middle of the pool.

Barnaby rushed to the edge, whining. The ball floated farther and farther away.

"Sometimes," the palm tree said gently, "the things we want are waiting on the other side of our fears."

Barnaby looked at the water. It sparkled like diamonds in the sun. He took one shaky paw forward. Then another.

*Splash!* His paws touched water. It wasn't scary at all — it felt like a cool, liquid hug.

Barnaby kicked his legs. He was doing it! He was **swimming**! The water held him up, lighter than air. He reached his ball and grabbed it triumphantly.

When he climbed out, dripping and proud, the palm tree dropped a small coconut beside him.

"Brave friends deserve rewards," she said.

Barnaby realized something wonderful that day: Sometimes the biggest adventures start with the smallest steps, and true friends — even leafy ones — help you find courage you didn't know you had.

And every summer after that, Barnaby was the first one in the pool, ball in mouth, tail wagging like a happy flag.
