The Pool Bet Backfire
Maya pressed herself against the chain-link fence behind the high school pool, heart hammering. She wasn't exactly a spy, but she had been monitoring Jenna's group chat for three days straight, and now she was finally making her move.
The mission: Operation Get-Notice-Without-Being-Obvious. Translation: she'd spent the entire homeroom period running a bet on who Tyler was going to ask to homecoming, and now she had to deliver proof.
"You're literally stalking them now?" Leo's voice made her jump. He leaned against the fence, eating a protein bar like he hadn't just ruined everything.
"I'm not stalking," she hissed, adjusting her oversized sunglasses. "I'm conducting informal social research. For science."
"For the twenty dollars you're going to win from the pool." He raised an eyebrow. "Same thing."
The pool — her secret betting ring that had somehow collected seventy bucks from the entire junior class — was supposed to be foolproof. She'd calculated it perfectly: Tyler's best friend had been leaving hints all week. Maya had connected the dots, cross-referenced Insta stories, and created a spreadsheet that definitely did not make her obsessed.
Just as Tyler and his crew approached the pool entrance, Maya's phone buzzed. A notification from the group chat she'd been secretly monitoring.
*Tyler: so who wants to come over after practice?*
Then, three rows down, Jenna's reply: *can't! running late to my cousin's quinceañera*
Wait. What?
Maya's carefully constructed theory crumbled. Tyler wasn't asking anyone to homecoming. He just wanted to hang out. The bet pool? Wrong. The spreadsheet? Useless. The spy mission? Completely unnecessary.
Leo was laughing so hard he dropped his protein bar. "You okay there, Agent Maya?"
She slid down to sit on the concrete, sunglasses pushed up on her head. "I hate everything."
"Next time," Leo said, "maybe just, like, talk to them? Instead of running a betting ring?"
Maya stared at the pool's rippling blue water. "That's not dramatic enough."
"Fair." Leo sat beside her. "Want in on my new pool? I'm taking bets on whether you ever admit you actually like Tyler."
Maya groaned. "I hate you."
"Love you too, spy girl."
