The Pocket Sphinx
Lily loved climbing the palm tree in her grandmother's backyard. Every summer, she'd scramble up the rough trunk and sit among the fronds, imagining she was a pirate captain sailing the seven seas.
One hot afternoon, Lily reached for a coconut when something sparkled in the palm of her hand. It wasn't a bug or a piece of glitter—it was a tiny sphinx, no bigger than her thumb, with golden fur and wings like a dragonfly.
"Greetings, young adventurer," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, and I've been waiting for you."
Lily gasped. "Waiting for me?"
"Yes!" Cleo fluttered her wings. "I guard the Tree of Wonders, and only someone with a truly curious heart can see me. Would you like to be my friend?"
Lily's heart swelled. She'd never had a magical friend before! "Yes! Oh, yes!"
Celo guided Lily to a hidden hollow in the palm tree, where dozens of tiny sphinxes were painting coconut shells with glowing colors. "We make wishes come true," Cleo explained. "But we're running out of magic dust. Someone stopped believing in wonder."
Lily knew exactly who. Her neighbor, old Mr. Grumble, never smiled at anything magical.
That evening, Lily carried Cleo in her pocket to Mr. Grumble's house. Through his window, they saw him sleeping with a frown. Cleo sprinkled a pinch of glowing dust, and suddenly Mr. Grumble's dreams filled with dancing sphinxes and singing palm trees.
When he woke the next morning, Mr. Grumble actually smiled. He stepped outside and noticed the colors of the sunrise for the first time in years.
Lily high-fived Cleo's tiny palm. "We did it!"
"Indeed," Cleo said. "Remember, Lily: magic lives wherever someone believes in it. And now you have a friend forever."
Every summer after, Lily climbed her palm tree to visit Cleo and the sphinxes, painting wishes and spreading wonder. She learned that the best magic isn't in spells or potions—it's in friendship, kindness, and never losing your sense of wonder.
