The Pet Store Gamble

Maya stood outside the neon-lit PetWorld, her heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she was about to make a decision that could absolutely wreck her social life. Inside waited Jordan—the friend who'd been ghosting her since seventh period began—and the adoption event she'd been hype-womaning for weeks.

"You're actually going through with this?" Jordan texted, and Maya's phone buzzed against her leg. "After what happened with the bull?"

Maya groaned. Last year's homecoming disaster—when she'd tried to impress crush Marcus by challenging his varsity jacket to a mechanical bull ride at Kyle's party—had become legendary. She'd lasted 1.3 seconds before face-planting into the padding while Marcus watched, looking embarrassed for her. The video had resurfaced on everyone's Finsta last week.

But this was different. This was about Walter. Her neighbor's ancient, grumpy **dog** who'd been her emotional support animal since her parents' divorce. Walter deserved better than being left alone all day while Mrs. Henderson worked doubles at the hospital. Maya had researched everything: local shelters, adoption events, even how to register an emotional support animal.

She pushed through PetWorld's doors. The air smelled like wood chips and anticipation. Near the front, a giant **bear** of a guy—literally wearing a bear costume, because PetWorld's marketing team had no chill—was demonstrating how to properly hold a **goldfish** bag.

"Jordan!" Maya called, spotting her best friend by the cat kennels. "You came."

Jordan turned, looking guilty. "I didn't want you to go through this alone. But Maya, what if—"

"What if I crash and burn again?" Maya interrupted. "What if this becomes another bull situation?"

A little girl nearby giggled. Jordan cracked a smile. "Okay, first: nobody calls it 'a bull situation.' And second..." She stepped closer. "Maybe that's the point. Maybe we're supposed to fail sometimes. Marcus was a jerk anyway."

The bear-costume guy high-fived a successful adopter nearby.

"So," Jordan said, studying Maya. "Walter needs a friend, huh?"

"Walter needs consistency," Maya corrected. "But maybe I need to learn that trying something new isn't always going to end in disaster."

Jordan linked arms with her. "Let's go find Walter's competition. But if we get fish, I'm naming one Bull."

Maya laughed. "Deal."

Three hours later, they walked out with two goldfish named Kevin and Bull (Jordan's compromise) and a promise to volunteer every weekend. Social life still uncertain. Marcus still irrelevant. But for the first time in forever, Maya felt solid.
