The Perfect Storm

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers frantically trying to tame her frizzy hair into submission. Her iPhone lay on the bathroom counter, screen lighting up with relentless notifications from the group chat. Everyone was already at Jordan's party, and she was still stuck in her bathroom, having a meltdown over something that literally didn't matter.

"You coming?" her best friend Chloe had texted ten minutes ago. "Tyler's here 👀"

Tyler. The reason Maya had spent forty-five minutes curling her hair, only to have it rebel against the humidity like it had personal vendetta. Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance, warning of the approaching storm that would ruin everything anyway.

"You about ready?" her dad's voice came from downstairs. "We can still get in a few tosses before the weather turns."

Maya almost said no. She was sixteen, way too old to play catch with her dad like a little kid. But something about the simple offer made her chest tight. She grabbed her baseball glove from the corner of her room – the one she hadn't used since last summer, when she'd decided she was too cool for softball and too busy trying to be someone she wasn't.

Her dad was already in the backyard when she stepped outside, the sky darkening behind him. He tossed her the ball like it was the most natural thing in the world, like she hadn't been distant and moody and obsessed with popularity for months.

"You've got your old form back," he said as she threw it back, the ball hitting his glove with a satisfying pop. "Remember that tournament you won last year? You were on fire."

Maya felt something loosen in her chest. This was easy. This was real. Not like trying to impress Tyler or keep up with Chloe's perfect posts or stressing about whether her hair looked right.

Suddenly, lightning cracked across the sky, purple and electric and terrifyingly beautiful. For a second, everything was illuminated – the backyard, her dad's proud smile, the baseball still spinning in the air.

"Storm's coming in fast," her dad said, but he was grinning. "Same time next week?"

"Yeah," Maya found herself saying. "Same time."

Inside, she picked up her iPhone and started typing to Chloe. "Actually, I think I'm gonna skip tonight. Need to do some stuff for myself."

The phone buzzed immediately. "Everything okay??"

Maya smiled, running a hand through her messy hair without even trying to fix it. "Yeah. Actually, everything's perfect."

Outside, the rain started falling, but for the first time in forever, Maya didn't care if her hair got frizzy. She had bigger things to worry about. Like figuring out who she actually was, without worrying who was watching.
