The Party Sphinx
Maya pressed her back against the kitchen counter, clutching a red plastic cup like it was a lifeline. Somewhere in the crowded living room, someone had knocked over a vase, and now water was spreading across the hardwood floor like an awkward silence at a family dinner. Perfect.
"Hey, you're Jordan's friend, right?"
Maya turned to find a guy leaning against the counter beside her. He had that annoyingly effortless confidence—the kind where everything just seemed to roll off him like water off a duck's back.
"Yeah," she managed, suddenly hyper-aware that she'd been standing there alone for twenty minutes like some kind of party sphinx, guarding the snacks from overly aggressive drunk people.
"I'm Ethan." He gestured toward the hallway. "Jordan's got this crazy goldfish in his room. It's been staring at me every time I walk past. Think it's plotting something."
Maya huffed out a laugh despite herself. "Probably just hungry. Or judging everyone. Mood, honestly."
"For real though." Ethan's eyes crinkled. "You okay? You look like you're mentally preparing to bear witness to a crime."
"Just trying to survive my first high school party without doing something embarrassingly Gen Z of me."
"Eh, you're doing better than the guy who just tried to fistbump the ceiling fan."
Maya actually laughed this time. The knot in her chest loosened.
"Wanna get out of here?" Ethan asked. "There's a 24-hour diner down the street. I'm craving pancakes like you wouldn't believe."
"Running away? Classic."
"Nah, just strategically relocating." He grinned. "Besides, I'd rather hear your actual thoughts than yell over music designed to rupture eardrums."
Maya studied him for a second—really looked. No games, no posturing. Just genuine interest layered under terrible party lighting.
"You know what?" She set down her cup. "Let's do it."
As they slipped out the back door into the cool night air, Maya realized something: sometimes the best moments happen when you stop waiting for permission to exist and just start living. The goldfish would understand. Probably.
