The Party Hat Incident
Jordan smoothed the brim of their dad's vintage fedora, hoping it screamed 'effortlessly cool' instead of 'desperate freshman.' The house party already thumped with bass that vibrated in their chest. This was it — their first high school party. Either they'd make friends or spend the next four years as the quiet kid who sat alone at lunch.
Inside, the air smelled like fruity vape smoke and expensive perfume. Jordan's best friend Maya materialized beside them, eyes wide. 'Dude, Taylor's cat is literally on the roof. No one knows how it got there.' Jordan followed her gaze to the ceiling where indeed, a calico cat sat perched on a dormer, looking down at the drunk teenagers like it owned the place. 'That's the most chaotic energy I've ever seen,' Jordan whispered.
They squeezed through the crowded kitchen where someone was doing keg stands in a Batman hat. Jordan tried to act natural, leaning against the counter, but their palms felt sweaty. Suddenly, Taylor — the senior whose house this was — burst through the back door, shirtless, face painted like a bear. 'WHOSE CAT IS THIS?' he roared, holding up the calico. 'It just jumped off the roof INTO MY POOL.'
The room went silent, then erupted. Jordan's crush, Sam, looked at Taylor and said, 'That's actually so bull, you can't just kidnap someone's pet.' Jordan's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. Sam had defended a cat. Sam was perfect.
'That's my cat!' a tiny freshman squeaked. Taylor paused, still in full bear paint, holding the cat like a football. 'My bad, little dude.' He set the cat down gently. 'But seriously, who let it on the roof?'
Later, outside by the pool, Jordan found Sam sitting alone, skipping stones across the water. 'Nice hat,' Sam said, and Jordan realized they were still wearing the fedora. 'Thanks. My dad's vintage.' 'Vintage is cool.' Sam paused. 'You know, you're actually pretty chill. Most freshmen try way too hard.'
Jordan's stomach did flips. 'Yeah, well. Figured I'd embrace the awkwardness.'
Sam laughed. 'Good call. Bears the burden better than fighting it.' The pun was terrible, but Jordan found themselves grinning anyway. Maybe this high school thing wouldn't be so bad after all.
