The Party-Crashing Fox

Maya's first high school party wasn't exactly the TikTok-worthy montage she'd imagined. Instead, she found herself wedged between the snack table and a wall, watching her best friend Chloe charm everyone with that effortless social grace Maya could never master.

"You're like a goldfish in a shark tank," Chloe had said earlier, tweaking Maya's outfit. "Two-second memory span, freaking out every time someone looks at you. Just chill, okay?"

Chill. Right. Maya gripped her red plastic cup like it was a lifeline. The bass from some流行 song thumped against her chest, but she couldn't relax. Not when she kept catching glimpses of那个 guy from chemistry class—Jason, with his stupid perfect hair and stupid perfect smile.

Then chaos exploded through the back door.

A fox. A literal orange-brown fox, tail fluffy and eyes bright, darted between legs and jumped onto the kitchen counter, sending bags of chips flying everywhere. Someone screamed. Jason—beautiful, composed Jason—scrambled onto a chair like he'd seen a ghost.

Maya didn't think. She just moved.

"Hey, buddy," she whispered, slowly approaching. The fox froze, ears perked. Maybe it was those countless hours watching wildlife documentaries instead of actually having a social life, but she knew exactly how to handle this. "You're just scared, aren't you?"

She guided the fox toward the back door, her hands steady even as her heart raced. The room watched in stunned silence. Jason watched too—really watched her—for the first time all night.

"That was... badass," Jason said, jumping down from his chair as the fox disappeared into the night.

Maya finally felt it—that electric, terrifying spark everyone talked about. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Chloe: "U just became the MAIN CHARACTER."

And maybe Chloe was right. Maybe sometimes you had to let a fox crash the party to realize you weren't the goldfish anymore—you were the one who knew exactly what to do when everything went wrong.
