The Party Crash

Maya stood outside Tyler's house clutching a bottle of cheap sparkling **water** like it was champagne. This was it—her first high school house party. Her Instagram stories had been nothing but aesthetic brunch pics and StudyGram content for way too long. Time to level up her social life.

Inside, bass thumped against her chest. The air smelled like cheap body spray and something burning. She spotted her friend Chen by the makeshift dance floor, which was actually just someone's cleared-out living room.

"You came!" Chen yelled over the music. "I saved you a drink!" He handed her a suspiciously red cup. "It's basically a **vitamin** supplement. With vodka."

Maya took a tiny sip and almost choked. Right. Liquid confidence.

That's when she saw him—Jordan, the junior who sat behind her in history class, currently locked in what looked like an intense staring contest with a **goldfish** bowl on the counter. This was her chance. She'd been mentally drafting their first conversation for weeks.

"So," Maya said, sliding up beside him. "Deep conversation with Nemo here?"

Jordan blinked. "His name is Bubbles, first of all. And I'm not talking to the fish. I'm preparing."

"For..."

"Truth or **sphinx**." He pointed to the dining room where a group was gathered around what looked like an Egyptian mythology board game. "Tyler's cousins invented it. You have to answer riddles or do challenges. Last week, someone had to eat a raw egg."

"Wait," Maya said. "Is this like Truth or Dare but with ancient Egypt?"

"Pretty much. And I suck at riddles." Jordan gestured to his beanie. "I'm already sweating through this."

Then Tyler appeared, his voice cutting through the music. "Alright who's next? Jordan, my man, you're up!"

The room went quiet. Jordan looked like he'd rather be anywhere else. Without thinking, Maya grabbed his arm.

"Team challenge," she announced. "We do it together."

"You sure?" Jordan whispered. "These guys are **bull**-ies with their questions."

"Please," Maya said, suddenly terrified. "I've got this."

Tyler squinted at them. "Fine. Together. Here's your riddle: I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"

Maya's mind went blank. She was such a fraud. But then Jordan's hand brushed hers, and he whispered, "Think about what you're holding."

She looked down at her bottle of sparkling water. Then it clicked.

"A map," she said confidently.

The room erupted. Tyler actually high-fived her.

Jordan's face lit up. "That was actually awesome."

"We make a pretty good team," Maya said, feeling something warm and genuine that had nothing to do with whatever was in that red cup.

"Hey," Jordan said. "Want to go save Bubbles from Tyler's cousin? I think she's trying to teach him tricks."

Maya grinned. Her first party, and she'd already rescued a fish, solved a riddle, and maybe—just maybe—made a real connection. Social level achieved.
