The Papya Incident
Mateo regretted everything about choosing papaya for the team dinner.
The cross country team gathered at Ruby's house, her backyard strung with那些 cheap lights she'd bought on clearance. Everyone was being normal—Jayden and Marcus talking about colleges, Chen complaining about his calves, Ruby laughing at something Tyler said.
And there Mateo sat, awkwardly clutching a slice of papaya like it was a forbidden artifact.
"What even IS that?" Ruby asked, flopping down beside him on the grass. She smelled like coconut sunscreen and vanilla. Mateo's heart did that thing where it forgot how to rhythm properly.
"It's... papaya," he managed. "My mom bought, like, five of them from the Filipino market because they were on sale."
"That's actually kinda cool," Ruby said, and Mateo felt himself simultaneously relax and panic because she was looking at him with those annoyingly pretty eyes. "We should run to the convenience store and get hot Cheetos to go with it. Balance out all that health with some artificial orange death powder."
She grabbed his wrist. Her fingers were warm. Mateo's brain short-circuited.
"Wait—" he started, but Ruby was already pulling him up, laughing, her hair catching the backyard lights. They took off running down the street, Mateo still clutching his papaya slice like an idiot, Ruby's laughter trailing behind them like music.
They collapsed against the convenience store wall, both breathless. The papaya had somehow survived intact.
"You know," Ruby said between gasps, "you're actually really funny when you stop overthinking everything."
Mateo looked down at his papaya, then at her. "I'm not really funny though. That was just... panic."
"Panic can be funny too," she grinned. "Anyway, Tyler was being weird at dinner. I'm glad you saved me."
Saved her? Mateo's chest did something warm and terrifying.
"I should probably tell you something," Ruby said, suddenly serious. "I kinda... saw your TikTok about the papaya incident last week."
Mateo died inside. He'd made that account thinking no one from school would find it. "You're... spying on my social media?"
"It came up on my FYP!" She laughed, nudging his shoulder. "The way you described your mom forcing papaya on you because 'it builds character'? That was actual comedy gold."
Mateo couldn't tell if he wanted to melt into the sidewalk or high-five himself.
"Anyway," Ruby said, grabbing his hand again, "we should probably run back before they send a search party. And bring back Cheetos for everyone."
They ran back in the dark, papaya and Cheetos in hand, Mateo's heart racing for reasons that had nothing to do with cardio.
The papaya incident, it turned out, wasn't a disaster at all.
