The Papaya Watch

Eleanor's arthritis made mornings slow, but she never skipped her vitamin ritual. The organizer box—Sunday through Saturday—sat beside her photograph of Harold, gone three years now. He'd called it their zombie routine: shuffle to kitchen, swallow pills, shuffle back. Missing it felt like forgetting part of herself.

Her papaya tree, Harold's pride, drooped in the July heat. He'd planted it the year they married, back when papaya seeds were exotic treasures from his Navy travels. Now its blossoms promised fruit she'd share with no one but memory.

Grandma? You're being spied on.

Seven-year-old Leo peeked around the corner, cardboard periscope in hand. Nana spies back, she called, waving her teaspoon. His giggle warmed spaces the vitamins couldn't reach.

Their grandmother-grandson game: Leo as spy, Eleanor as quarry. He'd learned it from Harold's old war stories—Harold who'd tracked signals across the Pacific, who'd come home to plant papaya and watch Eleanor pretend not to watch him watching her.

The periscope wobbled. Grandma's zombie vitamins working yet?

Working on keeping me sharp enough to catch spies.

Leo scrambled closer, cardboard abandoned. What did Grandpa spy on?

Eleanor touched the papaya leaves. He watched me garden. He watched you learn to walk. He said watching people love each other was the only reconnaissance that mattered.

Leo considered this, small fingers tracing the bark. Was he a real spy?

Real as this tree. Real as vitamins. Real as papaya bread on Sunday mornings.

The boy grew quiet. I spy with my little eye... something Grandpa loved.

He pointed at the emerging fruit, green fingers reaching toward sun.

That's it, she whispered, tears surprising her. That's exactly it.

Later, she'd teach him to check papaya ripeness the way Harold had—gentle press, patient wait. For now, she watched them both: the tree that rooted her history, the boy who rooted her future, and the vitamins that bridged the gap between being and belonging.
