The Papaya Tree's Secret
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's cottage in the woods. Behind the little house stood a magnificent papaya tree, its green fruit hanging like ornaments from strings of jewels.
One sunny morning, Grandma asked Lily to pick the ripest papaya for breakfast. Lily skipped outside, her curly hair bouncing with each step. She reached up to pluck a golden papaya when something made her pause.
The papaya shimmered! A tiny door appeared in its side, no bigger than a thumb.
Lily pulled out her iPhone to take a picture. But as she focused the lens, a fuzzy nose poked through the door!
"Hello there!" squeaked the smallest bear Lily had ever seen. He was only six inches tall, with emerald-green eyes.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear said, climbing onto Lily's hand. "I'm the guardian of the papaya tree. You must be special to see me."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "Grandma never mentioned a tiny bear!"
"That's because I only appear to children who are brave enough to try new things," Barnaby explained. "Are you brave, Lily?"
Lily thought about the spinach salad Grandma had made last night. She had refused to even taste it.
"I don't know," Lily whispered. "I was scared to try the spinach at dinner."
Barnaby patted her thumb with his tiny paw. "Being brave doesn't mean you're never scared. Being brave means trying something even when you ARE scared."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a shimmering green leaf. "This is magic spinach from my garden. One bite will help you see that new things can be wonderful."
Lily took a tiny nibble. It tasted sweet and sunny, nothing like the spinach she had imagined!
"It's delicious!" she cried.
Barnaby smiled. "The magic wasn't in the leaf, silly girl. Regular spinach tastes just as good when you give it a chance. The magic was in you being brave enough to try."
Lily hugged Barnaby gently. "Will I see you again?"
"Whenever you need to remember how brave you can be," he whispered, then disappeared back into the papaya.
At breakfast, Lily took a big bite of her spinach salad. Grandma's eyes widened.
"I love it!" Lily exclaimed, patting the pocket where she had tucked her iPhone—and the magical photo she had taken of Barnaby.
Sometimes, she learned, the most wonderful adventures begin with being brave enough to try something new.
