The Papaya That Purred
Mango was no ordinary cat. With fur the color of sunshine and eyes like two sparkling emeralds, she lived on an island where magic floated on the breeze like butterfly wings.
One morning, Mango heard a strange sound. Purr-rurr-rup. It wasn't a cat purr. It wasn't a bird song. It was coming from behind the great palm tree at the center of the island.
Mango started running, her paws thumping softly against the warm sand. She was the fastest cat on the island, and she knew something wonderful was waiting.
Behind the palm tree grew a papaya unlike any other. It glowed with a golden light, and when Mango sniffed it, the fruit purred again! Purr-rurr-rup!
"You can talk?" Mango whispered, her whiskers trembling with excitement.
"I can do more than talk," said the papaya in a voice like honey dripping on toast. "I can grant one wish to anyone brave enough to share me with friends."
Mango's heart leaped. She could wish for all the fish in the sea! Or a soft bed made of clouds! But then she thought of her friends—Kiki the lonely parrot, Tobi the turtle who moved too slowly to play games, and little Leo who had no one to play with.
"I wish," Mango announced, "that everyone on our island finds a best friend!"
The papaya glowed brighter than sunshine. Magic swirled around Mango like sparkling dust. Suddenly, Kiki appeared, chirping happily. Then Tobi, zooming around on new roller-skate shells. Then Leo, holding a beautiful shell he wanted to show someone.
"Will you be my friend?" Leo asked Mango.
Mango purred the loudest purr of her life. They all shared the magical papaya, and it tasted like joy and friendship mixed together.
From that day on, no one on the island was ever lonely again. And sometimes, if you listen closely, you can still hear Mango and her friends laughing behind the palm tree, where a new golden papaya grows every full moon—just in case someone else needs a wish.
