The Papaya Test

sphinxpapayafriend

I stared at the weird orange fruit on Liam's kitchen counter like it was about to explode. My best friend Sarah stood beside me, practically vibrating with nervous energy.

"You have to try it," she whispered, her eyes darting toward the living room where Liam—the actual sphinx of our sophomore class—sat playing FIFA with his friends. Liam never talked to anyone outside his soccer squad. His face was this perfect, unreadable mask. Classic sphinx behavior.

"It looks like alien insides," I muttered, poking the papaya with my fork. "This is your master plan? Exotic fruit as a conversation starter?"

"It shows sophistication," Sarah insisted, adjusting her crop top for the third time. "It says you're cultured, interesting. Not basic."

I laughed. "Right, because咬 into tropical slime is definitely gonna make Liam fall in love with me."

But I did it. I took a bite.

And immediately gagged.

Sarah's eyes went wide. "Oh my GOD, are you okay?"

"It tastes like—" I swallowed hard "—like someone mixed a melon with old socks."

Suddenly, Liam was there. Leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, looking actually amused for the first time ever. The sphinx had cracked.

"First time?" he asked, nodding at the papaya.

I froze. My face was probably bright red. "Yeah. It's... interesting."

"My mom buys them thinking they're healthy," Liam said, grabbing a slice himself. "They taste like nothing and everything at the same time. Hate them."

He winked. Actually winked.

"Come play FIFA," he said. "Sarah too. You can be on my team. Since you survived the papaya test."

Sarah mouthed "I TOLD YOU" while I grabbed a paper towel, still processing. The sphinx wasn't mysterious after all. He was just a guy who hated papaya too.

Sometimes the worst moments become the best ones. And sometimes, weird orange fruit is exactly what you need to find your people.
