The Papaya Sunset

The pool at the Sunset Valley Resort was empty, save for Maya and a single floating leaf that had drifted from the nearby garden. She'd come here to escape—to run away from the wreckage of her marriage, from the awkward conversations with friends who didn't know what to say, from the empty half of the closet she still couldn't bring herself to clear out.

Thunder rumbled in the distance. The weather report had mentioned possible storms, but Maya had stopped checking forecasts weeks ago, along with everything else that required planning or hope.

She swam another lap, her body moving through the water with practiced efficiency. Running had been her escape for years—first from her father's criticism, then from difficult conversations, then from herself. But you can only run so far before you catch up to yourself.

"Room service!" A voice called from the balcony above. A waiter placed a covered dish on a small table beside the pool, then retreated without noticing her in the gathering twilight.

Maya pulled herself from the water, dripping onto the concrete. The dish held fresh papaya, arranged in perfect crescent slices, with a small bowl of lime on the side. She'd ordered nothing.

Then she remembered—this was what he'd always ordered. What she'd ordered for him, every morning of their honeymoon at this same resort, ten years ago. The papaya that he'd pretended to love, that he'd secretly fed to the stray cat that lived behind the bungalows when she wasn't looking.

Lightning split the sky, illuminating the empty chair beside her. The first heavy drops of rain began to fall, flattening her hair against her skull, mingling with the salt water on her skin.

She picked up a slice of papaya, tasted it—really tasted it—for the first time. It was faintly musky, sweet without being cloying, nothing like the generic tropical drinks she'd been ordering all week. She'd never liked papaya. She'd only ordered it because he said he did.

The storm broke in earnest, rain pooling around her feet. Maya stood there, eating the papaya slice by slice, letting herself get thoroughly, completely soaked. Not running from the rain, not seeking shelter. Just standing in it, finally letting herself feel something real.
