The Papaya Summer
Margaret stood in her garden, the morning sun warming her shoulders as it had fifty years ago when her grandfather taught her to plant papaya seeds. "The secret," he'd said, kneeling beside her in his worn hat, "is patience. You can't rush something that wants to grow in its own time."
At seventy-eight, Margaret finally understood. She'd spent decades swimming against life's currents, stubborn as the bull her grandfather kept until she was ten—a creature of brute force and unlikely gentleness. Old Bessie would let Margaret pet her soft nose while others kept their distance. "Some things aren't what they seem," her grandfather would say, his voice rough with wisdom.
Now, as she dropped her vitamin supplements into her morning routine, Margaret smiled at the memory of her mother's voice: "Take your vitamins, they'll make you strong." What had really made her strong was her grandfather's garden lessons, his patience, his way of sitting on the porch watching sunset paint the sky while she swam in the pond they'd dug together.
The papaya tree beside her bloomed—her third generation of trees from those original seeds. Her grandchildren would visit soon. She would teach them what her grandfather taught her: how to plant seeds, how to swim through life's difficulties, how to recognize that beneath stubborn exteriors—even bull-like ones—beats a gentle heart.
Margaret adjusted her wide-brimmed hat against the brightening sun. She had become her grandfather, hands earth-stained, heart full of the same quiet wisdom. The papayas would ripen in August. The grandchildren would arrive in July. And between now and then, she would swim in her memories, tend her garden, and whisper thanks to the grandfather who'd given her roots enough to last a lifetime.
