The Papaya Sphinx
Maya smoothed down her weird vintage hat—like, actually weird, not aesthetic weird—and hovered at the edge of the pool party. She'd spent two hours getting ready, which was embarrassing to admit even to herself. The hat was her mom's, obviously.
Across the pool, Jason and his crew were doing that thing where everyone laughs too loud at everything. Classic performative friendship. Maya's stomach did that familiar knot thing whenever she looked at him.
Then she saw the cat.
Some scraggly orange cat had wandered into the Schmidt's backyard and was perched on their outdoor furniture like it owned the place. It was staring at everyone with this absolutely judgmental expression, like it was some kind of sphinx watching mere mortals make fools of themselves.
Okay, so sphinx was a weird word to think, but Maya had just finished mythology unit and her brain was stuck on it.
The cat jumped onto the snack table, knocked over a fruit bowl, and then—because the universe hated her—sent a papaya rolling straight toward the pool.
Time slowed down. The papaya hit the water with an undignified splash. Everyone turned. Jason. His friends. The whole social hierarchy froze, waiting for someone to react.
Maya could either pretend to be on her phone or she could own it.
She stepped forward, adjusted her ridiculous hat, and said, "That papaya is living its best life."
Jason looked at her. Actually looked at her. "That was... unexpectedly philosophical."
"The cat suggested it," Maya said, because why not commit to the bit.
The sphinx-cat yawned, clearly unimpressed by all of them.
"You're kinda weird," Jason said, but he was smiling. "Good weird, though."
Maya's heart did that stupid flutter thing. She adjusted her hat again and finally, finally felt like she could breathe.
"Weirder than a fruit suicide mission?" she asked.
"Way weirder," he said, and patted the empty spot beside him.
The cat sat on the papaya's grave like it had planned this whole thing. Maya took off her hat, smoothed her hair, and sat down. Sometimes the universe worked in mysterious ways. Or maybe cats just really hated papayas.
