The Papaya Scheme

Maya played **spy** behind her phone screen, watching Sophie's Instagram stories like they were classified intelligence. At Northwood High, the social hierarchy worked like a **pyramid**—Sophie and her squad at the top, everyone else scattered somewhere below, trying not to slide off the edges.

"You're not still obsessing over Sophie's papaya smoothie detox, are you?" Jordan asked, dropping onto the cafeteria bench beside her. "Dude, that girl could convince everyone that grass clippings are the next superfood."

"It's not just the smoothie," Maya muttered. "She's selling them. Like, literally selling them. Five bucks each, and people are actually buying them."

Jordan snorted. "Because Sophie says they're packed with **vitamin** whatever and will make your skin glow or whatever. Last week she was all about alkaline water. The week before that, it was that tea cleanse that made half the junior class spend third period in the bathroom."

Maya watched Sophie glide past their table, surrounded by her usual entourage. She looked perfect, effortless, like she'd invented the concept of being sixteen and not awkward. Meanwhile, Maya was still trying to figure out if her acne medication was making her skin worse or if it was just stress from AP Bio.

"I wish I could just... not care about being part of the pyramid," Maya said. "Like, Sophie's basically a grifter, but everyone still wants to sit at her lunch table. What is that?"

"It's the **bear** effect," Jordan said, tearing open a bag of chips. "You know—big, loud, everyone either wants to be near it or run away. Sophie's loud. Her schemes are loud. People like loud."

Maya thought about it all through sixth period, through the walk home, through her failed attempt to make her own papaya smoothie with a fresh papaya her mom had bought from the international market. It sat on the counter, looking alien and slightly terrifying, its orange flesh speckled with black seeds like some kind of fruit-based galaxy.

That night, she posted a photo of her disastrous smoothie attempt—the lumpy, off-color mess of it, the way it had splattered all over her shirt. *"Papaya: 1, Maya: 0,*" she captioned it.

Her phone buzzed. Jordan had liked it. Sophie had liked it.

Three days later, Sophie DM'd her: *"Your papaya game is tragic but kinda iconic. Want to collab on a pop-up stand? Split profits 50/50?*"

Maybe the pyramid wasn't so rigid after all. Or maybe she'd just found her own way to climb it—papaya-first, messy-shirt and all.
