The Papaya Ripe on the Counter

Elise packed the final box as Mr. Biscuits watched from his perch on the windowsill. The cat had been her solace through three years of marriage—her only witness to the quiet erosion of love, the way affection can calcify into coexistence. When she'd found James's iPhone unlocked on the nightstand two nights ago, the messages from Hannah hadn't even surprised her. The betrayal had been months in the making, coded in missed dinners and conversations that died in mid-sentence.

Now she lifted the stuffed bear from the top shelf of the closet—a gift from her father before he died, its glass eye clouded with age. She'd borne this relationship past its expiration date, convinced that persistence counted as loyalty. But some things cannot be borne forever.

On the kitchen counter, the papaya she'd bought yesterday sat perfectly ripe, its skin yellowing to orange. She'd planned to make them breakfast in the morning, something sweet and new. Now she sliced it open, the flesh bright as sunset against the gray dawn filtering through dirty windows. The scent was tropical and cruel, a reminder of the honeymoon they'd never take, the life they'd never build.

She took a bite. It was delicious. She deserved at least that much.

The cat meowed as she shouldered her purse and the box that contained everything that mattered. The iPhone remained on the nightstand, its screen dark. Let him explain its absence. Let him bear the weight for once.

Outside, the morning air was cold on her face. She didn't look back.
