The Papaya Pyramid Incident

Jordan stood before the grocery store display, staring at the precarious pyramid of papayas like it held the secrets to the universe. Their phone buzzed — Maya, the friend who'd been ghosting since she joined the volleyball clique.

"Emergency squad meeting. Food court. NOW."

Jordan clocked out early. Whatever. Mr. Henderson wouldn't notice.

Maya sat at a table alone, pushing spinach around her salad with the enthusiasm of someone processing a breakup. Which she technically was — from their friend group. The food court hummed with after-school energy, groups laughing at inside jokes Jordan wasn't part of anymore.

"So," Jordan said, sliding into the seat opposite her. "What's the emergency?"

Maya's eyes darted around. Lowered voice. "I need you to help me sabotage the pep rally."

Jordan blinked. "Excuse me?"

"The volleyball team is doing this ridiculous healthy-eating presentation tomorrow. They built this massive fruit pyramid center thing and" — Maya's face twisted — "I'm supposed to give this speech about 'fueling your body like a champion' but half these girls live off iced coffee and anxiety. It's so fake. I can't do it."

Jordan thought about the papaya pyramid at work. How it toppled three times yesterday. How rebuilding it felt strangely satisfying.

"What's your plan?"

"We swap their fruit display with something... less Instagrammable."

"Maya." Jordan leaned in. "You're asking me to help you trash your own social standing because you grew a conscience?"

"I don't know." Maya poked her spinach. "I think I'm just tired of pretending to be someone I'm not. You called it months ago — that group was gonna eat me alive. You were right. About everything."

Jordan waited.

"I miss you," Maya said quietly.

The food court noise faded to background.

"I'm still here," Jordan said. "But I'm not helping you sabotage anything. You wanna quit the team, quit. You wanna roast them in your speech, roast them. But don't be sneaky about it. Own it."

Maya stared. Then — tiny smile — "You sound like my therapist."

"Your therapist has excellent taste in friends."

They spent the next hour making fun of everyone's social media posts. The old rhythm returned easy as breathing. And yeah, maybe Jordan did accidentally knock over the papaya pyramid on their way out, sending fruit rolling everywhere while Mr. Henderson sighed dramatically from the checkout lane.

Some pranks are worth it.
