The Papaya Protocol

papayabullhat

Marcus's life was ninety percent avoiding attention and ten percent sweating through his hoodies. That was before The Papaya Incident.

It started with a hat—a faded Bulls snapback his abuelo left him. Marcus only wore it because his hair was doing that weird fluffy thing after third period gym. Bad call. Because when Maya Rivera, literal goddess of the sophomore class, stopped at his family's bodega after school, Marcus was too busy faking casual to notice the papaya rolling off the display stack.

The fruit hit the floor with a comical splat. Maya jumped. Marcus lunged. His Bulls hat caught on a shelf, flew off his head, and landed directly in the pulpy mess.

"Oh my GOD," Maya said, staring at his hat. "Is that—limited edition? From 1998?"

Marcus's face burned. "My abuelo gave it to me. Before he—yeah."

Something shifted in Maya's expression. She wasn't laughing. She was looking at the papaya-splattered cap like it was actually cool.

"My tía collects vintage sports merch," she said. "She's gonna freak when I tell her I saw this."

"You're not gonna tell her about the papaya part, right?"

Maya grinned. And Marcus, for the first time in his life, didn't hate being noticed.

By Monday, half the school was calling him Papaya Guy. He should've been mortified. Instead, he wore the hat—cleaned, obviously—like armor. When Connor, the actual starting basketball player, tried to make it a thing in the locker room, Marcus just shrugged.

"Yeah," he said. "Papayas are deadly, man. Watch yourself."

Connor paused. Then he laughed. "Alright, Papaya. I see you."

Maya caught his eye in the hallway and mouthed: told you.

Marcus adjusted his Bulls hat and grinned. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the origin stories you actually want to live.
