The Papaya Protocol
Maya moved through the hallway like a zombie—finals week would do that to you. Three AP exams, two projects, and approximately zero hours of sleep. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. *Target acquired.*
Okay, so maybe calling herself a "spy" was dramatic. But after catching her best friend Chen sneaking around with the new girl, Riley, all whispery and secretive during lunch, Maya had officially activated investigation mode.
She spotted them by the lockers. Chen was saying something intense, Riley nodding like her life depended on it. Maya ducked behind a pillar, heart pounding. *They're plotting against me.* *Riley's totally stealing my best friend.* *I'm being replaced.*
Then Chen caught her eye. Waved her over. Crap.
"We were just—" Chen started.
"Spying on you?" Riley finished, raising an eyebrow. "Chill, Maya. We've been working on something for your birthday."
Maya blinked. "My birthday's not until—"
"Tomorrow, yeah, but Chen wanted to practice." Riley reached into her bag and pulled out a container. "My abuela makes these with papaya. It's... kinda weird, honestly, but Chen said you used to eat them all the time in Hawaii?"
The scent hit Maya like a memory door slamming open—papaya with lime, her grandmother's kitchen, the last summer before everything changed. She'd mentioned that to Chen once. Exactly once.
"I tried to recreate it," Riley said, suddenly sounding unsure. "It's probably terrible, though—"
Maya took a bite. Tart, sweet, imperfect. "It's perfect," she said, and meant it.
"Spy mission successful," Chen grinned.
"Shut up," Maya laughed, but the zombie feeling was gone. "Next time? Just tell me."
"Where's the drama in that?" Riley deadpanned.
Maya took another bite. Fair point.
