The Papaya Protocol
Emma adjusted the brim of her dad's vintage bucket hat, pulling it down like a shield against the terrifying social pyramid that was Lincoln High's cafeteria. At the bottom? Her. At the top? The sunlit table where Jayden Chen laughed with effortless charisma, his friends orbiting him like planets around a star.
"You're literally spying again," Kayla whispered, sliding onto the bench beside her. "It's been three months, Em. Either talk to him or accept your fate as the mysterious girl in the weird hat."
"I'm not spying," Emma protested, though her eyes darted back to Jayden's table. "I'm conducting observations. For science."
"Right. Because that's not creepy at all."
Emma sighed, poking at her lunch. The cafateria smell mystery meat and despair. Then she saw him: Jayden, walking toward her table. Her heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. She straightened her hat, prepared to finally say something cool, something mysterious and alluring.
"Hey," he said, stopping in front of her. "You're Emma, right?"
"Uh, yeah?" Her voice squeaked. Smooth.
"Cool." He held out something wrapped in foil. "My mom made too much papaya salad. She's obsessed with this new recipe, keeps trying different combinations. Thought you might want to try version forty-seven."
Emma stared at him. "You... brought me papaya?"
"Yeah, you're always sitting here looking sad about your lunch." He grinned, all casual and devastating. "My mom's Thai, she takes her papaya salad very seriously. This one's got the perfect balance of sour and spicy. Tell me what you think?"
He walked away before she could process it. Kayla practically exploded beside her. "HE BROUGHT YOU FOOD. HIS MOM'S HOMEMADE PAPAYA SALAD. You're not a spy anymore, Em. You're the main character."
Emma unwrapped the foil. The papaya salad smelled like lime and chili and home. She took a bite and—it was perfect. Unexpected. Just like everything good that ever happened to her.
She adjusted her hat, suddenly feeling a little less like she needed to hide. Sometimes the universe conspired to surprise you. Sometimes papaya changed everything.
