The Papaya Protocol

zombiepyramidpapayaspy

Maya felt like a **zombie** as she dragged herself through the gym doors. Homecoming week. The ultimate social hierarchy—a literal **pyramid** of popularity where she occupied the basement level. The air reeked of cheap body spray and desperation.

"You look like you're about to pass out," whispered Sam, her fellow band geek and co-conspirator in their mutual mission to survive high school with dignity intact. Or at least survive.

"I've been running on three hours of sleep and caffeine," Maya muttered. "Plus I have to work on that Egypt presentation for AP World. Why did I pick the **pyramid** of Giza again? Oh right, because I thought it would be 'fascinating.'"

Sam snorted. "Come on. There's a buffet."

The refreshment table was a disaster zone, but one thing stood out: a bowl of exotic fruit chunks. Maya speared what looked like **papaya**—her mom's absolute favorite, something Maya had refused to try since age seven because it looked weird.

"What is that?" Someone asked behind her.

Maya turned to see Jordan, the boy she'd been secretly **spy**-ing on via Instagram stories for months. He was cute in that annoyingly effortless way, standing there like the pyramid's peak wasn't crumbling under his feet.

"**Papaya**," she said, immediately regretting how she said it. She felt like a **zombie** again, but the socially awkward kind. "My mom's obsessed with it. I've literally never tried it."

Jordan's eyes lit up. "No way. My dad's obsessed with it too. He eats it with lime and chili powder."

"That sounds... illegal," Maya said, but she was smiling.

"Try it." Jordan held out a little plate with the exact combo. "If you hate it, I'll never speak to you again. Deal?"

Maya took a bite. The explosion of sweet-spicy-tangy hit her tongue like nothing she'd ever experienced. "Oh my god."

"Right?!" Jordan grinned. "Who knew fruit could be a whole vibe?"

"Wait, you've never had it either?" Maya realized.

"Nope. Just watched my dad do it for seventeen years. Too scared to try."

They stood there as another pop song thudded in the background, two people at the bottom of the social **pyramid**, discovering **papaya** together while looking like total **zombies** from finals week. But for the first time, Maya didn't feel like she was **spy**-ing on Jordan's life from the outside.

"Next time," Jordan said, "we're trying dragon fruit."

"Deal."
