The Papaya Protocol

Maya stood in the corner of Leo's basement, clutching a red solo cup like it was her only lifeline. The house party was everything she'd imagined — thumping bass, laughter she didn't understand, people who seemed to know exactly how to exist in their own bodies.

"You're the new girl, right?" Someone slid up beside her. A guy in a faded band tee, gym shorts that hit above the knee. Definitely not trying to fit a mold.

"Maya," she managed, heart pounding. "And you're..."

"Bear." He gestured at himself. "Like, literally. Everyone calls me Bear because I'm apparently 'jolly but could crush you.'"

She laughed despite herself. First genuine laugh of the night.

"Wanna try something?" He pointed across the room where a girl stood triumphantly over a fruit bowl. "My cousin brought papaya from the farmer's market. She thinks it makes her sophisticated."

"Papaya? Really?"

"It's her whole aesthetic now. Last month it was matcha. Before that, kombucha." Bear shrugged. "Teenagers, man. We're all just trying on personalities until one sticks."

Maya nodded. That hit different.

"Hey," he said suddenly, "wanna help me with something? My friends are trying to set up the gaming console but the HDMI cable's all messed up. You look like you know your way around technology."

She didn't, actually. But she followed him anyway.

They ended up behind the TV, untangling a cable knot while he talked about how everyone at school performed versions of themselves. How he'd spent freshman year pretending to like basketball before realizing he'd rather read fantasy novels in his backyard.

"The papaya thing," she said, "is just another costume."

"Exactly." He held up the cable like a trophy. "We're all just bears in papaya sweaters, pretending we know what we're doing."

Something clicked into place. Not the cable — that was still a mess. Something inside her chest.

"I like that," Maya said. "Bears in papaya sweaters."

"Yeah?" He grinned. "Wanna go get some actual food that isn't exotic fruit performance art?"

"Absolutely."

Outside, the air was cooler. Bear was still talking, but she was just watching the way his hands moved when he got excited about something stupid and perfect. And for the first time all night, maybe the first time in months, Maya didn't feel like she was performing at all.
