The Papaya Protocol
I felt like a total spy, lurking behind the cabana where no one could see me. My cousin's pool party raged on — graduation edition, splashy and loud — while I hovered with the fruit platter like the awkward cousin I absolutely was.
The water shimmered with that California golden-hour glow, and everyone looked good. Naturally. Chloe, my crush since seventh period algebra, glided through the pool like she owned it. Which, in the social pyramid of our high school, she kind of did.
I took a breath and grabbed the papaya. My aunt's "fancy touch." Whatever. I was gonna go over there. Actually talk to Chloe. Not be invisible.
Then Jason — Chloe's ex, total jock, currently shirtless and awful — sauntered up to her.
"So, are we doing this or what?" he asked, loud enough for half the party to hear. "I know you're still into me. Stop playing games."
I froze. Papaya in hand like a weapon.
"Jason," Chloe said, her voice tight. "Seriously? You're full of it. You literally cheated on me with Taylor."
"That was months ago!" He stepped closer. "Come on, don't be —"
"Bull," she said, clear and sharp. "You're full of bull. Always have been."
My palms were sweating. I could either retreat to my cabana corner or...
Or.
I walked over. Not cool. Not smooth. Just present.
"Hey," I said. "Chloe. You want some papaya? It's actually pretty good."
Jason stared at me like I'd grown a second head. Chloe's eyes flicked from him to me, then down to the fruit.
Then she smiled. Not her fake smile. The real one.
"Yeah," she said, stepping away from Jason. "Yeah, I do."
We walked toward the shade together, leaving Jason and his ego behind.
"Thanks for the rescue," she said, popping a piece of papaya into her mouth. "You're... cooler than I thought."
"I try," I said, feeling like maybe, just maybe, I wasn't invisible anymore.
The papaya was actually decent. The social pyramid didn't feel so tall. And for the first time all night, I wasn't watching from the sidelines. I was in the pool. Finally.
