The Papaya Protocol
Elena ran the strand of dark hair through the mass spectrometer, her fingers trembling. Three weeks of corporate espionage had narrowed down to this single follicle, this microscopic witness to betrayal.
"Papaya enzyme ready," her colleague Marcus whispered, though the lab was empty at 2 AM. "The protease will break down the keratin matrix."
The papaya sat on the counter like an exotic paperweight — its enzymes worth more than the fruit itself. They'd been using papaya-derived protease to extract DNA from hair samples found in the CEO's office. Someone had been stealing proprietary formulas, and the hair was their only lead.
Elena had suspected James from IT — always lingering near sensitive meetings, asking too many questions. But when the results scrolled across the screen, her stomach dropped.
The match wasn't James. It was her own husband, David.
"He's not a spy," Elena said, the words tasting like ash. "He's an accountant. He balances spreadsheets."
"Numbers tell stories too," Marcus replied softly. "Especially when they don't add up."
Later that night, Elena watched David sleep. His dark hair spilled across the pillow, the same color as the strand she'd analyzed. She thought about their wedding in Hawaii, how they'd laughed while feeding each other papaya at dawn, sticky-sweet and hopeful. They'd been so young then, so certain that love was enough armor against the world.
Now she wondered if he'd ever loved her, or if she'd just been another asset to acquire. A corporate spy who'd married the head of security to gain access.
David stirred, opening his eyes. "Everything okay at work?"
"Fine," she said, reaching for his hand. "Just the usual." Beneath the sheets, she palmed a small pair of scissors. The papaya enzymes had revealed the truth about his DNA. Now she'd find out what was inside his heart.
