The Papaya Proposition
The social pyramid at Northwood High was brutal—unspoken but visible as a neon sign. Maya had landed somewhere near the bottom freshman layer, desperately calculating her way up.
Every afternoon, she'd escape behind the apartment complex to visit the stray cat she'd named Cleo. The cat didn't care about social ladders or awkward silences. She just purred and accepted Maya's offerings of turkey deli meat, which was honestly more than Maya could say about most people at school.
"You gonna talk to him or what?" Maya's best friend Sam gestured toward Alex, the junior lifeguard with the annoying perfect hair, across the pool deck.
"No way." Maya adjusted her towel, hyper-aware of how her thighs looked in her swimsuit. "He's like three pyramid levels above me. Besides, his ex-girlfriend still glares at me in chem lab."
"Bro, she glares at everyone." Sam smirked. "You're overthinking it."
The pool party was basically social warfare disguised as fun. Bodies floated in the water, laughter rang out too loudly, and somewhere in the distance, someone's phone blasted terrible music. Maya squeezed past a group of seniors, clutching her phone, when Alex suddenly appeared beside her.
"Hey."
"Hey."
The conversation wasn't exactly killing it. Then her stomach betrayed her with the loudest growl in human history.
"Haven't eaten yet?" Alex asked, like it wasn't the most embarrassing moment of her life.
"My abuela makes papaya smoothies every morning," she found herself saying. "It's her thing. I guess I got used to skipping lunch."
"No way." His face lit up. "My grandma does papaya with lime and chile. We fight over the last pieces."
They talked about grandmothers and weird family traditions for twenty minutes straight. By the time Sam found them, Alex had Maya's number and a promise to try abuela's smoothies.
"So," Sam whispered as they walked home. "The pyramid just got interesting."
"Maybe it's not a pyramid," Maya said, watching Cleo emerge from the bushes to greet her. "Maybe it's just people."
Later that night, her phone buzzed: an unknown number sending a thumbs-up emoji and the words papaya recommendations??
Maya smiled into her pillow. Some things were better than climbing to the top.
