The Papaya Proposition
Maya hovered at the edge of the **pool**, watching Jordan laugh with his friends across the water. She'd been crushing on him since freshman year, but every attempt to talk to him had ended in disaster. Tonight felt different—tonight she'd finally make her move.
"Eat this." A slice of **papaya** appeared in her face, courtesy of her best friend Chloe. "It's an aphrodisiac. Or something. I read it on TikTok."
Maya swatted the fruit away. "Gross. I need a plan, not tropical seduction techniques."
Their whispered strategy session was interrupted by Jordan's crew returning from the **padel** court next door, sweat-slicked and triumphant. Maya's stomach did gymnastics. This was it—her moment to shine. She'd practiced her cool-casual approach in the mirror for weeks.
But fate had other plans. A scrawny **cat** that had been lurking by the snack table chose that exact second to knock over an entire bowl of guacamole. Maya, already mid-step toward Jordan, tripped spectacularly into the pool, fully clothed.
Silence. Then—splash—Jordan dove in after her.
"I'm so graceful," he laughed, surfacing beside her. "Wanted to join you, but figured I'd make it look like an accident too."
Maya's cheeks burned, but Jordan's easy grin made something inside her shift. They spent the next hour floating in the shallow end, talking about everything and nothing while their friends partied on dry land. The papaya slice floated forgotten in the water.
"Wanna get out?" Jordan asked finally. "I think I'm pruning."
They climbed out dripping, neither caring about the stares. The cat curled on a nearby chair, looking smug.
"Next time," Jordan said, squeezing water from his shirt, "maybe we can actually plan to swim together?"
Maya's heart did a backflip. "Next time."
Sometimes, she realized, the best moments aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones that happen when a cat triggers chaos and you're too busy laughing to care that you're soaking wet at a pool party where everyone's watching and your crush is grinning at you like you're the best thing that's happened all summer.
