The Papaya Prophecy

Maya slipped into the cafeteria, clutching her Tupperware like a state secret. Again. Her mom's latest health kick meant lunch looked like something a forest animal would compost.

"What's that, Maya?" Brent's voice sliced through the lunch chatter. Perfect. The guy she'd been crushing on since seventh grade was finally noticing her, and it was because her lunch looked like radioactive sludge.

"Papaya," Maya mumbled, face burning. "With spinach."

"Raw spinach?" Sarah made it sound like Maya had announced she ate puppies. "That's intense."

The table went quiet. Maya felt like she'd just revealed she collected belly button lint. She shoved a forkful of greens into her mouth, trying to look confident instead of mortified.

Then Brent leaned in. "Actually, that's kinda cool. My trainer says I need more iron. You really eat that every day?"

Maya froze. Was this... working? "Yeah. My mom's huge on whole foods. Makes me take this vitamin D supplement too, says I'm basically a vampire from gaming all night."

Brent laughed. Not the mean laugh. The real one.

"Can I try it?" he asked.

Maya's brain short-circuited. Brent Carson wanted to try her weird health food lunch. She slid the container across the table, suddenly aware of every molecule of oxygen in the room.

He took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed.

"Okay, that's actually not terrible," Brent said. "A little like grass, but... fresh?"

"My mom says it'll give me glowing skin," Maya found herself saying. "I'm mostly just hoping I survive AP History without spiraling."

"Mr. Richardson's class is a sphinx," Sarah agreed. "Impossible riddles, zero mercy."

"Tell me about it." Maya took her own bite of papaya, suddenly feeling less like a freak and more like... part of something. "Yesterday he asked me to explain symbolism in The Great Gatsby, and I just sat there thinking about how I'd rather eat plain spinach for a week than speak in front of everyone."

"We've all been there," Brent said. "Hey, maybe we can form a study group? Sarah's been failing that class since September."

"I have NOT," Sarah protested, but she was grinning. "But yeah, I'm in."

Maya's chest did this fluttery thing. Not because her crush had just basically invited her to hang out. Because for the first time in forever, her weird lunch wasn't a secret shame. It was... just lunch. Something she could share.

"Same time tomorrow?" Maya asked, feeling brave. "I can bring extra papaya."

Brent grinned. "Only if you bring those vitamins. I think I need whatever's giving you that glow."
