The Papaya Prophecy

papayasphinxvitaminpool

The chlorine stung my eyes, but not as much as seeing Jayden laughing with Skylar by the **pool** edge. Again.

"You good, Maya?" Kae asked, floating beside me on her inflatable flamingo. "You've been staring at them for, like, five minutes. It's giving obsessed."

I dunked my head underwater to hide the blush. When I surfaced, Kae was still watching me, judgment in her eyes.

"I'm not obsessed," I lied. "I'm just... observing the social dynamics. Like a scientist."

"Right. Because that's not creepy at all." Kae flipped her wet curls. "You know what you need? A confidence boost. My mom says these **vitamin** gummies actually change your aura. She swears by them."

"Your mom also believes crystals can 5G, so..."

"Maya!" Kae splashed me. "Just take the gummies. They're mango flavored. What's the worst that could happen?"

The worst happened twenty minutes later when Skylar appeared beside us, her bikini perfectly coordinated, her smile sharp and knowing. Like a **sphinx** guarding secrets I wasn't ready to learn.

"Maya," she said. "Jayden told me you like **papaya**. That's, like, oddly specific." She laughed, but her eyes stayed cold. "Anyway, we're doing truth or dare over there. You in?"

My heart hammered. Jayden had noticed me enough to remember something I'd said once in bio class? But Skylar's tone made it feel like a trap.

"I..." I started, but Kae cut in.

"She's in," Kae announced, grabbing my hand. "But we're not playing by your rules. New game: Papaya Roulette."

"What?" Skylar wrinkled her nose.

"Exactly what it sounds like," Kae said, grabbing a **papaya** from the fruit table someone's mom had set up. "Someone slices it, and if you get the piece with seeds, you have to tell your deepest secret. If you don't, you eat the whole thing. Rind and all."

Skylar's friends giggled nervously. Even Jayden looked interested.

"You first," Kae said, sliding the plate toward Skylar.

Skylar picked a piece, hesitated, then popped it in her mouth. Her eyes widened. She swallowed slowly, then forced a smile. "Seedless. Good for me."

But I saw her hand shake as she reached for her drink.

"Maya's turn," Kae said.

I picked a piece, prayed for seedless, got lucky. Then Jayden chose, got the seeds, and everyone leaned in.

"Deepest secret," Skylar pressed, her smile predatory. "Go."

Jayden looked at me, then away. "I, uh, I failed my driver's test. Three times."

"That's it?" Skylar rolled her eyes. "Lame."

"It's pretty humiliating actually," Jayden said, quiet. "My little sister passed on her first try."

"Yeah, but it's not, like, *real* secret stuff," Skylar insisted.

"Then you go," Jayden said suddenly. "Show us how it's done."

Skylar froze. We all knew she never talked about herself - just gathered other people's secrets like she was collecting trading cards.

"Fine," she snapped, picking up the **papaya** knife. "But if I do this, you all have to admit I won." She sliced a piece, took it without looking, chewed.

Her face went pale.

"Well?" Kae asked. "Spill."

Skylar swallowed hard. For once, the sphinx-like mask fell away. "I'm failing algebra. Like, actually failing. My parents think I'm getting A's, but I have a tutor and everything and I still don't get it. I feel so stupid sometimes."

The pool went quiet.

"I can help you," Jayden said. "If you want. I'm actually good at algebra."

Skylar looked at him, really looked at him, for the first time all summer. "You'd do that?"

"Yeah," Jayden said. "I mean, we've got that thing where people think we're smart, but sometimes we're just pretending. You know?"

Skylar actually smiled - a real one. "Yeah. I know."

Later, as the sun set and people started leaving, Jayden found me by the snack table.

"Hey," he said. "I really did remember you like papaya. From bio, when we had that fruit identification lab. You were the only one who knew what it was."

My stomach did flip-flops. "You remembered that?"

"I remember a lot of stuff about you," he said. "I just never knew how to say it without sounding weird."

"Well," I said, grabbing a **papaya** slice from the table. "At least we know we're both weird enough to appreciate exotic fruit."

He laughed, and it was the best sound I'd heard all summer.

"Want to get algebra tutoring with Skylar tomorrow?" he asked. "Could be... interesting."

"Only if there's more papaya," I said.

Jayden grinned. "Deal."

Kae winked at me from across the **pool**. I checked my phone - her message was already waiting: "told you the gummies would work your aura ✨"
